Arkansas Interfaith Power and Light emerged from Green Teams and similar organizations at individual houses of worship. The Arkansas Affiliate IPL also emerged from the Arkansas Green Faith Alliance, established in 2008 for increasing awareness among members of the faith community. The Green Faith Alliance, Green Teams at houses of worship, and similar organizations are separate and distinct from Arkansas IPL but work in collaboration.

In 2009 the Arkansas Green Faith Alliance grew to more than 300 members statewide and earned the Conservation Organization of the Year Award from Arkansas Wildlife Federation.

The Green Faith Alliance became Ark. IPL on the day that Bishop Kenneth Hicks, Rev. Stephen Copley, Leo Hauser, Scharmel Roussel, Rabbi Eugene Levy, Rev. Malik Saafir, Elizabeth Minton, Joann Mills, Linda Sherman, Ellen McNulty and Ann Owen  signed official paperwork as founding members.
Rev. Jenni Duncan, Rick Owen and David Gill also were involved with Ark. IPL in the early days as founding members.

Soon after, the newly-established Arkansas Interfaith Power and Light earned a statewide award from the Arkansas Sierra Club.
